I was browsing at my local quilt shop, looking for a backing fabric for my red, white and blue quilt, when I spied the new Kaffe Fassett book, Country Garden Quilts. It was a moral imperative that I purchase their last copy. The quilts in this book are absolutely beautiful. My quilts usually lean toward the more traditional, but these fabrics and designs spoke to me.
The next day was the last presidential debate. I watched and yelled at the tv. McCain was such a baby when he insisted that Barack Obama apologize for John Lewis' remarks, when McCain would not concede that he needed to apologize for Palin's remarks. Unbelievable! Then he air-quoted "women's rights" with a mocking tone. I about flew out of my chair at that one. He has some nerve!!!
Well, I happened to find myself at the quilt shop again the next day and what do you know, they had loads of red and pink Kaffe fabrics - just what I needed to make the Windmills quilt from my recent book purchase. As she was cutting my fabric, the clerk started discussing the debate and offered up that she was an Obama supporter. I was a bit surprised since I was definitely in the redder part of the county, but I took the bait and we discussed our mutual dislike of the McCain/Palin ticket. As we chatted, we noticed how the colors in the fabric matched my passion for this election. Perhaps I am channeling my political fever into my quilting because these are not my normal colors. I've had a chance to sew a bit this week and I've actually manged to get pretty far into the construction process.
Check out my Obama quilt so far.
